HOME SHOWS 3RD DEGREE
On Wednesday, after six years and more than 40 postponements magistrate Raadiyah Wathen finally sentenced four men to 14 yrs in prison for killing a Cape town lesbian. The ruling was hailed as victory by gender and human rights activist. They hope that the sentencing will send a clear message to those who are intolerant. In townships around the country young women are constantly harassed, maimed and even killed just for practicing their constitutional right of choosing who to love.
South Africa was one of the first countries in the world to have a constitution that provides for non-discrimination based on sexual orientation, but despite our impressive constitutionally protected right - social attitudes towards gay men and women remain upsetting.
This week 3rd Degree looks at the anguished and hostility confronted by gay men and women on a daily basis in our townships. Is government doing enough to raise awareness? What can be done to stop these gross violations of human rights.
