Free-to-air channel e.tv commemorates the 20th Anniversary of former President Nelson Mandela’s release from prison with an exclusive documentary, First Step To Freedom, airing on Wednesday 10th February at 8PM.

The momentous day, 11 February 1990, two decades ago signalled a new era of hope and reconciliation for all South Africans. Director/cameraman Craig Matthew captured the historical moment and now for the first time never-before-seen footage of the day will be shown.

Watch all the preparations involved leading up to the release of Apartheid’s most famous political prisoner. Hear in Mandela’s own words how it felt to have his first taste of freedom, after 27 years of confinement and President at the time, F.W de Klerk gives us an insight into the political landscape.

While the cameras were turned off, the competition between media groups for prime location outside Victor Verster Prison was fierce. The nation rejoiced in the streets of Cape Town as friends, fellow comrades and ordinary citizens eagerly awaited the return of their hero.
