When a gruesome murder in Manhattan leaves detectives baffled, they call on retired, paralyzed Rhyme to help solve the mystery. To act, literally, as his right hand, street cop Amelia Donaghy is called in to assist. Assigned against her wishes, Donaghy overcomes her reluctance as she and Rhyme develop a mutual respect and affection.
