Experience Freedom in Cinema

The critically acclaimed theatre musical production Freedom, written and directed by multiple award-winning playwright and director Aubrey Sekhabi, starring Simphiwe Ndlovu and Kabelo “Bonafide Billi” Togoe, releases at the Ster-Kinekor Theatres (SK) cinema from 18 June 2021.

Produced by the South African State Theatre (SAST), Freedom tells the story of Phindile (played by Ndlovu), a Tshwane University of Technology student and leader of the Fees Must Fall movement, whose life takes a sharp turn after a student protest at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. Nothing will stop her to fight for the freedom of students and her own. The production also features performers Siphelele ‘Pdot’ O’ Mnyandu, Otto Maidi, and Thokozile Ndimande, backed by a strong cast of 47 members and a thirteen-piece band.

After premiering at the State theatre in 2018, Freedom was named Best Original Score / Arrangement / Adaptation at 2019’s Naledi Awards, following eight nominations which included Best Production Of A Musical, Best New South African Script, and Best Original Choreography. The screening of Freedom is part of the game-changing collaboration between the State Theatre and SK to exhibit theatre content in cinema. Other productions to be screened include:
