Unrest in Mozambique

An uneasy calm has settled over the now militarised town of Palma, in the gas-rich Cabo Del Gado province in Northern Mozambique.

Dozens of people were killed and thousands displaced when Islamic militant launched a coordinated assault.

A South African man was among those killed. Adrian Nel was shot while trying to flee the Hotel Amarula.

Just seven cars in the 17 vehicle convoy made it out of the compound.

Palma and some surrounding areas are now under government control but there are constant fears of fresh attacks.

Meanwhile, videos continue to circulate online with horrific images of massacres that claim to be

from Mozambique striking desperate fear in those still trapped in the area.

Piers Pigou, the International Crisis Group’s Senior Consultant for Southern Africa has been closely monitoring the situation in Mozambique.

He says there is a huge amount of unverified information flying around at this stage but the humanitarians situation remains dire.
