Could a common vaccine slow down COVID-19

Can a vaccine invented more than a century ago to prevent tuberculosis be used in the war against COVID-19?

The BCG vaccine seems to train the immune system to ward off a number of viruses.

A team of researchers in Australia have now launched a study,

in which front line health care workers will be given the BCG vaccine, to see if it decreases the likelihood of infection.

But in South Africa, where the vaccine is mandatory, there seems to be a shortage of the medication.

Immunologist at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, Professor Jonny Peter joined us to discuss this further.
