Daughter wants dad's killer to remain in jail

Leslie Cilliers, a policeman from Table View was gunned down with an AK47 by a group bank robbers he was chasing.

The suspects were eventually caught and handed life sentences.

But his daughter Roxanne van Eck received a call from the Department of Correctional Services this week.

It says one of the men convicted of his murder, is now being considered for release.

Van Eck has started a campaign to keep him and the others behind bars to makes sure they serve their 25-year sentence.

The sentences handed down to the men who killed Cilliers falls into a special category.

In 2019, the Constitutional Court ruled that prisoners who were sentenced to life after the 1st of October 2004,

for crimes they had committed before that date, are eligible for earlier parole.

Singabakho Nxumalo, the national spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services says the victims

have a right to have an input in the parole process.

He adds that parole is a right and not a privilege.
