Four children die after roadside sandpit collapses

The bodies of four children were recovered from a sinkhole in Nyanga in Cape Town on Monday.

The children disappeared after the sandpit they were playing on near the N2 collapsed.

ANC Ward Councillor, Khaya Yozi, who speaks on behalf of some of the families, says a 5-year-old boy who survived the tragedy

played a critical role in identifying his friends. Yozi says the families were hoping that their children would survive the ordeal, but it wasn’t the case.

He says it’s possible the recent rains and flooding contributed to the sandpits and sinkholes that formed in the area.
