RocoMamas and Rack ‘n Grill ‘smash’ it out

Who owns the right to the words ‘smash burger’?

Well that’s been at the centre of a dispute, between burger chain RocoMamas and a small food business called Rack 'n Grill. The food truck business has been using the name ‘smash burger’ since 2015. Last week owner Muammer Kasu was asked to change the name of his burger which is registered and trademarked by RocoMamas.

But after the story went viral on social media, RocoMamas, which is owned by Spur was accused of using bullying tactics. The two parties met yesterday to discuss the matter and Kasu joined us to give us the full rundown.

He says he has been able to stand firm but adds that he has been taken aback by the whole ordeal.

In a statement, RocoMamas confirmed that Rack ‘n Grill, has been granted permission to use the trademark for its current business format.

RocoMamas also apologised to its customers and all those affected.
