SA could face a food crisis

With logistical operations back on track at the Port of Durban time is running out to get imported perishable foods to retailers.

The SA Meat Processors Association and the Association of Meat Importers and Exporters are calling for an urgent action plan

by government to ensure imported perishable food containers are re-routed to inland cold storage facilities.

The KZN unrest and Transnet’s cyberattack has created major backlogs for both exports and imports at the Durban port.

There are currently 290 containers which need to be placed in cold storage.

The associations say it is critical if South Africa wants to avoid chronic food shortages.

It’s particularly concerned about the access to affordable chicken and meat products for poor communities.
