Stiff fines for election fake news

Political parties could face fines of up to R200 000 for spreading misleading and fake messages ahead of the November municipal elections.

Those found guilty could have their votes or party registration cancelled. They’ll be closely monitored by the recently launched Local Government Election Anti-Disinformation Project.

It's a collaboration between civil society groups and individual partners including former DA MP Phumzile van Damme who says they will be making use of technology to make sure there are not violations.
