Runner Runner follows Richie Furst, a Princeton graduate student struggling to pay tuition while pursuing a degree in business and finance. To cover his fees, Richie promotes online gambling to fellow students. When he loses his own savings on a high-stakes poker game he believes was rigged, he investigates and traces the platform to its powerful owner, Ivan Block.

Convinced he has uncovered fraud, Richie travels to Costa Rica to confront Ivan directly. Instead of denying the accusation, Ivan offers Richie a job within his global online gambling empire. Drawn by wealth, luxury, and influence, Richie accepts and quickly rises through the organization’s ranks.
