There are places where money buys power, secrets protect families and love comes at a price. Welcome to Shonalanga, a fictional town in the heart of Mpumalanga, where the land holds the promise of wealth – but only a powerful few seem to benefit.
From Monday, 31 August at 7PM, e.tv takes viewers into this world with the premiere of Land of Mills and Money, a new South African daily drama where nothing is ever quite what it seems.
At the centre of the story is Phiwe, played by Nelisiwe Sibiya, a young and ambitious police officer whose life changes forever after a fateful encounter during a heist. What happens that night leaves Phiwe with a dangerous secret – one she knows could destroy everything if it comes to light.
Determined to protect the truth, Phiwe finds herself walking a dangerous line between her duty as a police officer, her family and the people she loves. But keeping a secret in Shonalanga is no easy task.
Enter Mazwi Mhlongo, played by Winnie Ntshaba. A formidable township matriarch, Mazwi quickly recognises that Phiwe's secret could give her the leverage she needs. As Mazwi begins to use the information to her advantage, Phiwe is forced to confront just how much she is willing to sacrifice to keep the truth buried.
And then there is Muzi Mhlongo, played by Zamani Mbatha – the man Phiwe truly loves.
Their relationship is complicated by the decision Phiwe made during the heist, putting the future of their love in jeopardy. With the truth standing between them, Phiwe must choose between protecting her secret and fighting for the man she loves.
A town built on secrets
Land of Mills and Money is a story about love, loyalty, ambition, justice and redemption. It explores what happens when personal choices collide with family expectations and powerful interests.
In Shonalanga, everyone has something to lose. As Phiwe's secret threatens to unravel, relationships will be tested, alliances will shift and those in power will do whatever it takes to protect their interests.
The drama brings together a stellar cast of South African talent, including Themba Ndaba as Melusi, Jo-Anne Reyneke as Thembi, Sphelele Luthuli as Khwezi, Mbali Ngiba as Gog’Sindi, Kenneth Nkosi as Pastor Caiphus and Gcinile Nkosi as Mam'Dee.
