Rebecca Shozi – The Weight Bearer Waiting to Exhale

Rebecca is the rock of the family, though she’s been dealt a hand that would break most. After being unjustly accused of killing her husband, his family kicked her and her two kids out with nothing but the clothes on their backs and a traditional kist. Now, she’s starting at absolute zero, back in her mother’s house where she’s half-jokingly teased as a return soldier (umabuya emendweni). Rebecca is the definition of working-class grit—she works herself to the bone, never complains, and rolls with life’s brutal punches while waiting for her moment to finally breathe.

Malume Jacob, AKA “MyBoy” – The Forgotten Uncle

Jacob is Rebecca’s older brother, a man trapped between past promise and present reality. His university degree and graduation photo sit proudly on the room divider—painful reminders of unfulfilled potential. Unemployed for years and living off a R370 social grant, Jacob carries a deep, quiet shame about being a grown man dependent on his family. To mask the pain, he adopts a persona of humor, bravado, and township "showmanship." He’s the local know-it-all, ready with an opinion on everything from international politics to neighborhood gossip.

Gogo Shozi – The Stylish Matriarch

Forget the image of a quiet, knitting grandmother—Gogo Shozi is colorful, animated, and has her finger firmly on the pulse of Umlazi. A certified lover of showbiz, she still brags about dating a member of the legendary Soul Brothers back in her heyday. While she loves both of her children, she makes absolutely no secret of the fact that Jacob ("MyBoy") is her golden child, shielding him from the harsh realities of his situation.

Ayalanga Shozi – The Boxer with a Punch

Aya is Jacob’s daughter, recently dumped at Gogo’s doorstep after being expelled for putting a schoolboy in the hospital. Now in Grade 8, Aya is a prodigy in the boxing ring. Gogo is constantly trying to force her into traditional household chores so she can "act like a girl," but Aya uses the gym as her ultimate escape. In a crowded house full of big personalities, the boxing ring is the one place she can unapologetically be herself.
