She saw the collapse of the Apartheid regime and had great hopes for herself growing up. She was her family's pride and joy- the one who was going to rise above the challenges. She excelled at maths and science and had a plan of one day being a business owner. 

But when Phylis had her daughter when she was 17 years old, she had to abort her dreams. Still, she loves Crystal more than anything in the world. She believes earthly possessions mean nothing when one’s spirit is poor, and she has raised her daughter to have a fighting spirit if nothing else.

Her one dirty secret is that she does the books for one of the local drug dealers who also owns a strip club, through which he launders his money. Phylis was recently diagnosed with Anaplastic ganglioglioma, a very rare form of cancer. She needs expensive surgery to have it surgically removed. 

She carries this burden alone, refusing to tell Crystal. Her relationship with Crystal is tense, in any case, and she doesn’t want to saddle her young daughter with more worries. When she finds out Crystal is working at the strip club, she loses her cool, but her actions are motivated by self-righteousness.
