Mbali chooses to hustle through life her own way. She's young and beautiful. She’s a schemer who is willing to do anything to get what she wants. She is uneducated and very aware of her limitations. She hates being poor and thinks it makes her feel inferior. Mbali has never worked a day in life and won’t be caught dead manning the till or packing groceries at a supermarket which are the only jobs she can do with her background. She thinks work is beneath her. She loves shortcuts and knows she can’t get what she wants on her own. So she uses her body and good looks to lure rich men.

Phumla on the other hand is the opposite of Mbali and chasing her dreams the right way, she abhors the idea of a man taking care of a woman. Believing she is not beautiful like Mbali, Phumla wants to make it using hard work and persistence. Phindile managed to scrounge enough money for Phumla to study hairstyling and now she’s in training at a backroom salon in the neighborhood with dreams of eventually opening up her own salon.

Phindile is a former beauty queen beaten down by life. She supports her daughters, especially Mbali, and will do anything for them. She loves and spoils Mbali, it is clear to everyone especially Phumla, that Mbali is her favourite and this causes friction between the two daughters. But when Mbali is not around, she and Phumla get on like a house on fire. She raised Mbali to believe a man must take care of her and thought she would become a beauty queen like her.

Siya is a career criminal who has done multiple small crimes. He’s the stuck-up man. He’s a breadwinner for everybody, his mom, his girlfriend Mbali, and her family. He’s a provider. He’s an only child, mama’s boy and he’ll do anything to please her. He is a pleasant guy and gets on with women, but he also needs to be valued and craves respect so he’s hard on the street. Siya is dating the hottest girl on the block, Mbali. He loves her and his child but she’s also like a trophy for him. He thinks he’s grooming her for himself. Theirs is a ghetto/gangster love and he was Mbali’s first.
