This Youth Month
This Youth Month, South Africa’s most iconic film returns to screens as SARAFINA! marks its 33rd anniversary—not as a rerun but as a celebration of legacy, resistance, and cultural pride. It will air on e.tv first on June 14th at 8PM.
Being the first film to be made in South Africa after Nelson Mandela’s release from prison, SARAFINA! had its World Premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 1992. The film remains a cinematic classic and a cornerstone of the South African film industry.
SARAFINA! tells the emotionally charged story of a young girl’s awakening to resistance during the 1976 Soweto Uprising. The film stars Leleti Khumalo, Miriam Makeba, John Kani, Somizi Mhlongo, and Mbongeni Ngema, with international icon and Academy Award® winner Whoopi Goldberg and is produced by Anant Singh and directed by Darrel James Roodt.
Anant Singh commented, “SARAFINA! is a timeless classic of South African cinema and continues to be an audience favourite. Sharing the film with audiences during Youth Month is a tribute to the brave young people who became agents of change in achieving freedom, but it also highlights the role of strong women whose support was crucial. We are also delighted to continue our partnership with e.tv as our broadcast partner of SARAFINA!”
This Youth Month, South Africa is reminded that SARAFINA! continues to resonate with every new generation. Its key messaging is as relevant today as it was when it was first released.
Don’t miss SARAFINA! on e.tv on 14 June at 8PM
