Working the land to eradicate poverty

The majority of people living in rural areas are unemployed
and depend heavily on a government social grant.
To address this a Mthatha-based NGO is encouraging villagers
to use the land they have to generate an income.
The Master Rural Development Organisation
is also training residents to help them get a farming business started.

There’s a small sigh of relief for people who have lost their income during the latest move to lockdown level 4. The COVID-19 Ters fund is being booted up again. Government, labour and business have agreed to extend the temporary relief scheme. Matthew Parks, Cosatu’s Parliamentary coordinator says the nuts and bolts still need to be worked out and the decision still needs a final thumbs up from the national coronavirus command council and cabinet. Parks says they are hopeful that those affected by the regulations will be able to submit applications for relief by the 19th of July at the latest.

Worker exploitation claims at Durban's China Mall

Allegations of worker exploitation at the China Mall in Durban’s Point area have surfaced.
Some women claim they were sexually abused by a manager and supervisor at the mall.
