Vaccine demand wanes

Level three lockdown is here to stay for now as the country struggles to shake its COVID-19 third wave outbreak. Hospitals are experiencing pockets of intense pressure and the Western Cape, KZN and the Eastern Cape recorded a surge in active cases this week. Our new health minister Joe Phaahla has also confirmed that the national vaccine demand has slowed but government is forging ahead with its 70 percent herd immunity target by December.

She wants her health department to ensure that liquor outlets do not sell alcohol to those who are unvaccinated.

Health authorities have admitted vaccine supplies are dwindling and are being rationed in some provinces. But a US donation of 5.7 million doses of the Pfizer COVID vaccine is on its way to our shores. The first batch will touch down at OR Tambo International airport tomorrow. The health department says its put a system in place to allow people without ID's to get vaccinated. This applies to both locals and foreign nationals. The Health Department’s Deputy Director-General Dr Nicholas Crisp spoke to us earlier and explained how the health department records identification.

The head of the Grootvlei Medium B prison in Bloemfontein has vowed to achieve a 97 percent COVID-19 vaccination rate at the prison within the coming weeks.
Patricia Setlai believes this is achievable due to the open and transparent relationship
